Google released a new blog detailing the environmental footprint of its Gemini chatbot, claiming the model consumes the equivalent of five drops of water per query — though researchers argue it left out most of the actual water usage.
Elon Musk had a busy day of AI commentary on X, revealing new information about Grok 5, making bold claims about xAI’s ‘Imagine’ generator, and speaking on AI and declining birthrates in a series of posts and replies on the platform. Musk posted that xAI’s Grok 5 model will begin training in September, saying he believes the model “has a shot at being true AGI”.
OpenAI is slated to become Oracle's largest customer, with the companies having struck deals for more than 5 gigawatts of computing power, an unprecedented sum. Another of Oracle's largest customers is Nvidia, which rents capacity from an Oracle cluster of H100 chips in Japan and from a data center being built in Indonesia.
As part of Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI (alleging it ditched its founding mission, just to secure funding), OpenAI has accused Meta of coordinating with Musk over his bid to acquire the start-up. Back in February, Musk attempted to acquire OpenAI for $97B, and in June, OpenAI's lawyers—believing Meta was financially involved—tried to issue a subpoena to secure the documents that would prove it.
